On September 19th, China Eastern Airlines' domestic large aircraft C919 was filled with SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) for the first time to carry out the MU9192 commercial flight mission. The flight took off from Daxing, Beijing at 17: 16 on the same day and arrived at Hongqiao, Shanghai at 19: 01.

It is understood that the production of SAF is mainly made of waste animal and vegetable oils, oilseeds and used edible oil, municipal solid waste and agricultural and forestry wastes, and processed in a sustainable way. Compared with traditional fossil fuels, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 85% in the whole process from the collection of raw materials to the use of end users, and has remarkable emission reduction effect in the whole life cycle, which is well compatible with existing aircraft and civil aviation infrastructure. Therefore, SAF has become the first green alternative energy in the civil aviation industry, and it is also the most important emission reduction measure in the short to medium term.

China Eastern Airlines actively responded to the National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China to carry out SAF application pilot. In addition to MU9192 Beijing Daxing-Shanghai Hongqiao route, there are also four pilot routes, namely MU2110 Beijing Daxing-Xi 'an, MU5150 Ningbo-Beijing Daxing and MU6171 Chengdu Shuangliu-Hangzhou, involving various types of aircraft including C919. The pilot period is from September 19, 2024 to December 31, 2024.

In recent years, China Eastern Airlines has actively promoted the application of SAF. On April 24, 2013, China Eastern Airlines obtained the No.1 special flight license for bio-jet fuel issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and successfully completed the first bio-jet fuel verification flight with independent intellectual property rights in China. In 2021, China Eastern Airlines carried out the first batch of "full life cycle carbon neutral flights" in China, and by supporting afforestation, renewable energy power generation, natural gas power generation and other projects, it achieved carbon emission offset for aviation fuel used by more than 500 flights, and completed green flight for more than one million kilometers. On October 12th, 2022, China Eastern Airlines joined hands with Airbus to fill the A320NEO with SAF mixed fuel, completing the first flight from Tianjin to Xi 'an. In 2023, China Eastern Airlines took the opportunity of participating in the second SkyTeam Sustainable Flight Challenge to add SAF to flight MU2225, and successfully completed the first commercial application of SAF to China Eastern Airlines. On May 17th of the same year, the theme flight of "Sustainable Flight" of China Eastern Airlines using SAF flight set sail smoothly.
